New Instrument- Orbitrap High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) System

Microtrace recently acquired the Thermo-Fisher Orbitrap Exploris 120 Mass Spectrometry (MS) system. This high-resolution Mass Spectrometry (HRMS) system connects to our Water’s Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography system (UPLC) to provide LC-MS at extremely high-resolution mass accuracy.

Known or unknown samples present as discrete materials or complex mixtures are first passed through the UPLC where mixtures are separated, and individual components are purified and concentrated.  The sample can then be introduced to the Orbitrap system to obtain the masses of individual components. The system can routinely deliver 1 part-per-million mass accuracy on extremely small quantities of material.  This ultra-high-resolution and accurate determination of a molecule’s mass allows our scientists to solve problems ranging from relatively routine compound identification with quantification to more complex elucidation of a molecular degradation pathway.

The system is particularly useful for the pharmaceutical, environmental, food, and other manufacturing industries. It can assist with new compound discovery, contaminant characterization, degradation profiling, chemical identification, and other applications.  It is also useful for drug characterization, toxicological screenings, and textile dye identifications in forensic investigations.
