Rosa Mystica

At 6:30 pm (CST) on Tuesday December 8th, 2020, the Illinois chapter of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums will offer the next virtual presentation in their Rosa Mystica series of lectures. Entitled “Mary: Hearer of the Word,” the presentation will discuss recent restoration efforts on The Annunciation, a painting believed to be from the 16th century School of Ghirlandaio in Florence, Italy. Microtrace is a sponsor of the project.

Microtrace worked with The Annunciation using various techniques over several months. Our scientists x-rayed the painting to explore for covered and obscured layers of paint. Most recently, we sampled and identified pigments from various locations on the painting to help establish provenance.

The Illinois Partons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums

The Illinois Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums is a non-profit organization that raises funds for the preservation, care, exhibition, and restoration of art in the Vatican Museums. While the themes in their priceless collection may be eternal, the paintings, sculptures, frescoes, tapestries and historic buildings are sensitive to the ravages of time. The Patrons host events and programs throughout the year to support current restoration projects, provide an opportunity to mingle with fellow Patrons, and create awareness among the Chicago community about our mission.
