Dust

The study of dust has applications that are as widely ranging as its contents.  Dust is generated in nearly every imaginable endeavor, ranging from vacuuming a home, to nanodusts produced during industrial processes, to airborne particulate matter.  Dusts may be homogeneous or complex, and their analysis can provide insights into questions of forensic science investigations, intelligence investigations, or health and safety issues.

Whether the question is a matter of identification (what is in this dust), classification (what are the properties of a dust produced by a new process, such as one involving nanomaterials), geolocation (from where in the world did this dust originate), or association (does this dust suggest someone was doing a particular activity), Microtrace scientists have developed some of the most sophisticated approaches for obtaining maximum information from a given sample.

Some of the Microtrace scientists have been studying dust since they were old enough to look through a microscope and our scientists have published seminal papers on the topics and implications of dust analysis.  Microtrace also maintains vast reference collections of dust and its source materials for the purpose of these various types of investigations.
