Rail Crossing Accident

Following the collision between a train and a car at a railroad crossing, which killed the driver of the automobile, Microtrace was asked to determine whether the crossing gate was lowered at the time of the accident. During the inspection, physical evidence was recovered from the car as well as from the crossing gate. Intact red paint chips, recovered from the arm of the gate, were consistent with the factory applied red paint on the car. Additionally, fragments of black rubber recovered from the gate were consistent with the rubber gasket bordering the windshield of the vehicle. The automobile in question had scratched areas in its red paint job and a piece of the rubber missing from the windshield sealing gasket. These facts offered conclusive proof that the gate was functioning and was down prior to the collision.
